Stuart Pearce has predicted Manchester United to lose the 2022-23 Carabao Cup final to Newcastle United when the sides meet at Wembley.

Erik ten Hag has guided United to a cup final in his debut season as manager – only the second boss to do so since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

The Red Devils have not won any major silverware since 2017 when they lifted the Europa League under Jose Mourinho.

But United will look to end that six-year wait when they face Eddie Howe’s Newcastle at Wembley on February 26.

United beat Nottingham Forest 5-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals to become just the second side in history to reach 10 League Cup finals – after Liverpool – while Newcastle saw off Southampton over their two legs.

The Magpies have been enjoying a fantastic season and are currently third in the Premier League, one spot above United.

Newcastle have the best defensive record in the top-flight and have lost just one of their 20 games.

Pearce is predicting them to emerge victorious in the Carabao Cup final against United as he told talkSPORT: ‘I’ve got a sneaky suspicion Newcastle will win it.

‘They are four or five years ahead of schedule. Last year people were saying the money was coming in and they could be threatening the [Premier League] top six.

‘You were thinking, ‘Yeah, yeah yeah – I’ve heard this all before’ but it’s incredible what they have done this year.

‘The best defensive record in the league. Eddie Howe’s signings have been brilliant.

‘Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, Nick Pope and Dan Burn have been magnificent for them, I’ve got to say.

‘Howe’s turned Miguel Almiron around and Joelinton around. Eddie has done a brilliant job. The atmosphere there at moment is just incredible, the club is absolutely flying and credit to them.’
