Scooby Doo character Velma Dinkley has been confirmed to be a lesbian in the new Trick or Treat movie.

The iconic character falls for criminal Coco Diablo in the film, with delighted fans sharing clips of Velma becoming flustered or turning red when she’s in her presence.

In one scene shared on Twitter, Velma, who is famous for having a short red bob and wearing orange turtlenecks, is traveling with Coco and Shaggy in a car.

Barely concealing her crush, Velma says: ‘I’m sure Coco has some brilliant observations on the encounter we’ve just had’ before Coco replies: ‘The cute one is right.’

Coco then gently caresses Velma’s shoulder, with a look of pure ecstasy washing across the amateur sleuth’s face.

Fans have been sharing their joy over Velma’s sexuality, with one writing: ‘OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY CANON CANON IN THE MOVIES LETS GOOOOOO.’

Another penned: ‘I never thought I’d live to see the day when Velma is very clearly having gay thoughts on-screen.’

A viewer added: ‘Velma being a canon lesbian/gay in three separate SD universes is so amazing she’s just so powerful that she willed it into existence.’

However, Scooby Doo writer James Gunn and supervising producer Tony Cervone have both previously said that Velma was gay.

In 2020, James wrote on Twitter: ‘In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).’

The same year Tony also said, in a post on Instagram, that ‘Velma in Mystery Incorporated is not bi. She’s gay.’

Scooby Doo was first broadcast in 1969 on American channel CBS and follows the adventures of teenagers Velma, Daphne, Shaggy, Fred and their great dane Scooby-Doo.
