During his episode, the hosts cracked joked about Ice Spice’s ethnicity, with one asking if the 23-year-old rapper, who is of Nigerian and Dominican descent, was an ‘Inuit Spice Girl.’
Matty proceeded to laugh and the group did crude impersonations of an Inuit accent.
But the controversy didn’t cease there, as Matty proceeded to laugh as the presenters did impressions of hypothetical Japanese guards at German concentration camps.
The Robbers hitmaker also joked about watching a very brutal porn channel.
Naturally, listeners were outraged by the whole thing, branding his actions ‘racist, misogynistic, and ignorant.’
Matty later issued a feeble apology to Ice Spice in a now-deleted social media post, writing that he was ‘annoyed’ at how his joking got ‘misconstrued’ and he doesn’t want her to think of him as ‘mean’.
And now in his latest interview, Matty has hit out at fans who had an issue with what went down on the pod.
He explained to The New Yorker that, at the time, after doing so much promo, he wanted to do a podcast that felt simply like chatting with friends – which obviously backfired.
When asked if he had baited his fans on purpose, he said: ‘A little bit.’
‘But it doesn’t actually matter,’ he insisted.
‘Nobody is sitting there at night slumped at their computer, and their boyfriend comes over and goes, “What’s wrong, darling?” and they go, “It’s just this thing with Matty Healy.” That doesn’t happen.’
‘Maybe it does,’ the interview insisted.
Hitting back, Matty responded: ‘If it does, you’re either deluded or you are, sorry, a liar. You’re either lying that you are hurt, or you’re a bit mental for being hurt.’
‘It’s just people going, “Oh, there’s a bad thing over there, let me get as close to it as possible so you can see how good I am”,’ he argued.
‘And I kind of want them to do that, because they’re demonstrating something so base level.’
So, there’s that.
Meanwhile, rumours of a romance between Matty and Taylor Swift continue to rumble on, with speculation still rife that they’re an item following her split from actor Joe Alwyn.
Neither Taylor, 33, nor Matty has confirmed or denied a romantic relationship between the pair, but they have been photographed together several times looking cosy.
Matty has also attended several of Taylor’s concerts and has been spotted enjoying a boogie with her close friends and even her dad.
Sources have even claimed to have seen them kissing and cuddling on date nights in the city.
Taylor even proudly declared on stage in front of thousands that she’s never been happier in her life.
There’s not thought to have been any overlap between Taylor’s rumoured romance with Matty and her six-year relationship with Joe, 32, however, she did become friendly with the Girls singer last year as they worked on her album together.
Then, at the start of this year, Taylor shocked everyone by appearing at The 1975’s London gig at the O2 Arena, performing an acoustic cover of her hit Anti-Hero and covering their tune, Settle Down.
Speaking about the surprise in his interview with The New Yorker, Matty was full of praise.
‘It was really based of Taylor to do the show,’ he said, seeming a bit in awe that it had happened at all.
After the show had finished, it’s said that Taylor stayed backstage until 3:30am, singing The 1975 songs with the band’s bookkeeper after Matty had already left for home.
