The popular character, who left the Square two years ago, was seen outside the church in Monday’s (December 12) episode of the serial drama, staying out of sight from his loved ones as he said a final farewell to beloved Dot.
‘Goodbye Dot’, he said through tears. ‘I’ll miss you.’
Fans had been hoping for Ian to return, but his name was not on the list of returnees who were expected to stage a comeback for the special episode, which honoured Dot’s legacy.
Discussing how the surprise comeback came about, EastEnders Executive Producer said: ‘I called Adam and told him our plans and said Ian had to be there, and he agreed.
‘It was kind of as simple as that.
‘Ian didn’t make it into the church, but he said his own private goodbye to Dot. So that’s how it came about. Adam wanted to be there for June and he knew that Ian should be there for Dot.’
Ian’s comeback, in addition to being a lovely tribute to Dot, has also left viewers with some questions, after the legend was seen taking a phone call from an unknown person, who he called ‘love’.
But just WHO was he on the phone to?
‘I’m not going to tell you that!’, exclaimed Chris when asked this very question.
‘He’s on the phone to someone!,’ he continued. ‘We know who! I think Adam’s a little bit busy at the moment, but Adam is Ian Beale.’
Sounds like another return for Ian could very much be on the cards at some point.
Consider us intrigued. VERY intrigued.
